ABSTRACT:
Introduction: Iron-deficiency anemia is highly prevalent among adolescent girls due to increased biological demands during growth and menstruation, and insufficient dietary iron intake. Enhancing dietary knowledge can help prevent anemia in this vulnerable stage. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of Video Assisted Teaching (VAT) on knowledge regarding dietary management of anemia among adolescent girls. Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was adopted among 30 adolescent girls from KV Matriculation School, Sivapuram. Knowledge was assessed using a structured 20-item questionnaire before and after the VAT programme. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Pretest revealed 73.3% of girls had inadequate knowledge and none had adequate knowledge. Posttest showed 63.3% achieved adequate knowledge, whereas only 10% remained inadequate, indicating a significant gain in knowledge following VAT. Discussion: The intervention improved knowledge levels and highlights the importance of school-based nutrition education for preventing anemia among adolescent girls. Conclusion: Video Assisted Teaching is an effective strategy to improve knowledge regarding dietary management of anemia among adolescent girls.

INTRODUCTION:
Adolescence is a crucial developmental period marked by rapid growth and increased nutritional needs2. Iron requirements significantly rise due to blood volume expansion and onset of menstruation, placing adolescent girls at greater risk for anemia7. Lack of awareness about iron-rich foods further contributes to poor iron status and long-term complications1,4.
Despite national nutrition programs, anemia remains highly prevalent in India, necessitating educational interventions to promote dietary practices that prevent anemia4.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
Effectiveness of Video Assisted Teaching regarding dietary management for anemia among adolescent girls in a selected school at Sivapuram, Pudukkottai.
OBJECTIVES:
To assess the pretest knowledge regarding dietary management for Anemia among adolescent girls in selected school.
To assess the posttest knowledge regarding dietary management for Anemia among adolescent girls in selected school.
To evaluate the effectiveness of Video Assisted Teaching on knowledge regarding dietary management for Anemia among adolescent girl in selected school.
HYPOTHESIS:
H₁: Posttest knowledge will be significantly higher than pretest knowledge among adolescent girls.
METHODOLOGY:
Research methodology involves the system procedure by which the researcher starts from the identification for the problem to its final conclusion. It involves steps procedure and strategies for gathering and analyzing data in a research investigation. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Video Assisted Teaching regarding dietary management for anemia among adolescent girls in a selected school at Sivapuram, Pudukkottai.
Research Approach:
The research approach used in this study was an evaluative research approach.
Research design:
A quantitative pre-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design was used.
Setting of the study:
The study was conducted among 30 adolescent girls aged 12–20 years at KV Matriculation School, Sivapuram, Pudukkottai.
Population:
The populations for present study compose of adolescent girls in the age group of 12 – 20 years.
Sample:
Sample consisted of adolescent girls who are in the age between 12-20 years.
Sample Size:
The samples size for the study comprised of 30 adolescent girls in KV matriculation school.
Sampling Technique:
Non probability sampling used.
Criteria for Sample Selection:
Sample criteria involve the cases that meet some predetermined criterion importance. The criteria for sample selection are mainly depicted under two headings, which comprises the inclusion and exclusion criteria.
Description of the Research Tool:
A structured questionnaire consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions assessed knowledge on dietary management of anemia. Each correct answer scored 1, maximum score = 20.
Data Collection Procedure:
The period of data collection was 4 weeks. The study was conducted in KV matriculation school, Sivapuram, Pudukkottai. The data was collected for 30 adolescent girls. During the data collection investigators maintained good rapport and conducted the pretest by using the questionnaire and give the video assisted teaching programme on dietary management for anemia after one week post test was conducted by using the same questionnaire.
Plan for Data Analysis:
Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage) were used to compare pretest and posttest knowledge levels.
RESULTS:
Table 1: frequency and percentage distribution of pretest and posttest level of knowledge regarding Dietary management for Anemia among adolescent girls.

Before intervention, 73.3% of girls exhibited inadequate knowledge and none had adequate knowledge. After VAT, 63.3% demonstrated adequate knowledge, while only 10% remained inadequate, indicating significant knowledge improvement following the intervention.
DISCUSSION:
The VAT intervention was successful in increasing nutritional awareness, consistent with evidence that educational programmes positively influence adolescents’ dietary knowledge and health behaviors. Improved knowledge may support future anemia prevention and healthy dietary patterns5.6.
CONCLUSION:
Video-Assisted Teaching is an effective school-based intervention for improving knowledge on dietary management of anemia among adolescent girls. Sustained educational strategies are recommended to reduce anemia prevalence during adolescence.
IMPLICATIONS OF NURSING PRACTICE:
School health nurses can incorporate multimedia-based nutrition education to motivate healthy eating behaviors and empower adolescents to prevent anemia.
